What is MAAGO?
MAAGO is an intentional self-care brand rooted in Ghanaian heritage and thoughtfully created for modern life.
Our journey begins with traditionally made Ghanaian shea butter—known as nkuto in Twi—and a belief that everyday care can be simple, meaningful and deeply nourishing.
Rooted in ritual. Made for today.
Where does MAAGO shea butter come from?
The shea butter at the heart of MAAGO is ethically sourced from Northern Ghana, where generations of women have preserved the knowledge and craftsmanship of traditional shea production.
By sharing the origin of our shea, we hope to honor the women, land and cultural traditions behind every MAAGO product.
What does the name MAAGO mean?
The name MAAGO comes from our founder Alice Agyeman’s Ghanaian traditional name, Maame Birago.
It was inspired by the way her younger brother pronounced her name as a child—a meaningful family memory that came to represent warmth, heritage, identity and care.

What are MAAGO products made with?
Our products begin with traditionally processed Ghanaian shea butter and thoughtfully selected oils.
Because ingredients vary by product and scent, please review the complete ingredient list on the individual product page and packaging before use.
What is the difference between raw and whipped shea butter?
Raw shea butter is traditionally processed and presented close to its original form. It has a naturally firm texture and the distinct earthy aroma of unrefined shea. It can be used directly on the skin and hair or as an ingredient in your own body-care creations.
Whipped shea butter is blended and whipped to create a softer, lighter texture that is easier to apply. MAAGO offers both unscented and aromatic whipped options.
Both begin with Ghanaian shea butter—the best choice depends on the texture and experience you prefer.
Which MAAGO product should I choose?
Choose according to the ritual you want to create:
Raw Shea Butter: For those who prefer shea in its traditional, versatile form.
Unscented Whipped Shea Butter: For simple care without an added aromatic experience.
Calming Blends: For a soft, comforting addition to your daily ritual.
Revive Blends: For a fresh and uplifting aromatic experience.
Review each product page for its ingredients, scent profile and available sizes.
Are MAAGO products suitable for every skin type?
Our products are created to moisturize and soften the skin. However, every person’s skin is different.
Review the complete ingredient list before use and perform a patch test, especially if you have sensitive skin or known allergies. Discontinue use if irritation occurs.
Can I use MAAGO shea butter on my face?
Shea butter may be used on the face, but richer butters may not feel the same on every skin type.
Begin with a very small amount and observe how your skin responds. If you have sensitive, oily or acne-prone skin, consider consulting a qualified skincare professional before adding a new product to your routine.
Can MAAGO shea butter be used on hair?
Yes. Shea butter can be used to help moisturize dry-feeling hair and seal in moisture.
Warm a small amount between your palms before applying it lightly to the ends of the hair or other areas needing additional moisture. A little goes a long way.
Are MAAGO products fragrance-free?
Our unscented product does not have added scent, although the natural aroma of traditionally processed shea butter may still be present.
Our aromatic blends contain thoughtfully selected scented ingredients. Please review the ingredient list for the specific blend before purchasing, particularly if you are sensitive to fragrance or essential oils.
Are MAAGO products organic?
MAAGO uses carefully selected, naturally derived ingredients, beginning with traditionally processed Ghanaian shea butter.
We do not describe the finished products as certified organic unless that certification is specifically displayed on the product or packaging.
Are MAAGO products tested on animals?
MAAGO does not test its finished products on animals.

How should I apply whipped shea butter?
Apply a small amount to clean, slightly damp skin and massage gently until absorbed.
For a simple MAAGO ritual, use it after bathing or showering to help seal in moisture. Begin with a little and add more only when needed.
How often can I use MAAGO shea butter?
You may use it whenever your skin needs additional moisture. Many customers enjoy incorporating it into their morning or evening routine, especially after bathing.
Listen to your skin and adjust the amount and frequency according to what feels right for you.
Why has my shea butter softened or melted?
Shea butter naturally responds to temperature changes and may soften or melt during warm weather or shipping. This does not necessarily affect the quality of the product, but the whipped texture may change after melting.
Place the closed container in a cool, dry location or briefly refrigerate it until the butter becomes firm again.
How should I store my MAAGO products?
Store your products tightly closed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, excessive heat and moisture.
Use clean, dry hands or a clean applicator when removing product from the container.
What is a patch test, and how do I perform one?
Apply a small amount of the product to a discreet area of skin, such as the inside of your forearm. Allow time to observe how your skin responds before using the product more widely.
If redness, itching or irritation occurs, discontinue use.
What should I do if I have allergies or sensitive skin?
Please read the complete ingredient list before using any MAAGO product. This is especially important if you have allergies or sensitivities to nuts, botanicals, fragrances or essential oils.
Perform a patch test before full use. If you have a diagnosed skin condition or questions about whether an ingredient is appropriate for you, consult a qualified healthcare professional.
Can MAAGO products be used on children?
Children’s skin can be especially sensitive. Review the complete ingredient list, choose an age-appropriate product and consult your child’s healthcare professional when needed.
Avoid using aromatic or essential-oil blends on infants or young children unless advised by a qualified professional.
