I am Alice Agyeman, founder of AGO LIMITED and the woman behind MAAGO.

I grew up in Ghana, where caring for ourselves and one another was woven into everyday life. Shea butter was always present in our home—used to nourish the skin, soothe minor cuts, and care for the family. At the time, I did not think of it as a “self-care product.” It was simply part of how we cared.

As I encountered younger generations across the African diaspora, I noticed that many viewed shea butter as something old-fashioned—an African body butter disconnected from modern beauty and self-care. Many knew little about where it came from, its importance in nature and the cosmetics industry, or the women and communities whose knowledge have sustained its production for generations.

That stayed with me.

I began whipping shea butter and blending it with thoughtfully selected oils to make it feel more familiar, inviting, and relevant to a new generation. I wanted to show that tradition does not have to be left behind as the world moves forward. It can be invited into modern life—thoughtfully presented in new forms while preserving its origin, integrity, and meaning.

That philosophy guides how MAAGO products are made. By whipping traditionally made Ghanaian shea butter and blending it with carefully selected, naturally derived oils, I create an experience that feels familiar to today’s generation without disconnecting shea from the land, knowledge, and women behind it.

For me, this is not about modernizing tradition. It is about making room for tradition within modern self-care—and allowing the old and the new to exist together with purpose.

That desire became part of what drives MAAGO.

I created MAAGO to share the richness of Ghanaian shea butter while encouraging a more intentional approach to everyday well-being. Each product is rooted in the traditions I grew up with and thoughtfully made for the way we live today.

MAAGO began with shea butter, but the vision extends beyond one product. Through AGO LIMITED, I am building a home for meaningful products and experiences that bring together culture, care, and community. I also hope to create greater visibility and opportunity for the Ghanaian women whose knowledge and craftsmanship have sustained the shea tradition for generations.

This journey is deeply personal to me. It connects where I come from, what life has taught me, and what I hope to share with others: caring for yourself is not an indulgence. It is a quiet and necessary way of honoring who you are—and traditions do not have to disappear for us to move forward.
