Our Story
Rooted in ritual. Made for today.
The Meaning of MAAGO
The name MAAGO comes from our founder Alice Agyeman’s Ghanaian traditional name, Maame Birago, meaning “Mother of Determinants.”
MAAGO was inspired by the way her younger brother pronounced her name as a child. What began as a tender family memory eventually became the name of a brand shaped by heritage, belonging, and the desire to carry something meaningful forward.
The name reflects the spirit of what we are building:
Personal yet purposeful.
Rooted yet evolving.
Grounded in heritage and created for modern life.
From Ghana, With Purpose
The shea butter at the heart of MAAGO is sourced from Northern Ghana, where generations of women have preserved the knowledge and craftsmanship required to transform shea nuts into the rich butter used throughout the world.
Their work supports families and communities across Ghana’s shea-producing regions and supplies an ingredient that has become essential to the global beauty industry. Yet the people behind that ingredient are too often absent from the story presented to consumers.
MAAGO seeks to make that story more visible.
By sharing where our shea comes from and recognizing the hands, land, and knowledge behind it, we invite our community to understand the product more fully—not only for what it does, but for what it represents.
As we grow, we intend to deepen our relationships with the women and communities connected to our shea and create more meaningful ways for MAAGO’s progress to contribute to theirs.
Thoughtfully Made
Every MAAGO product begins with traditionally processed Ghanaian shea butter.
From there, we thoughtfully create whipped, unscented, and aromatic options designed for different preferences and everyday routines. Our formulas bring together shea butter and carefully selected oils without unnecessary artificial additives or preservatives.
The result is body care that feels comforting and contemporary while remaining connected to the tradition at its foundation.
We want each MAAGO product to feel like something you can use, enjoy, and make your own—a simple part of daily life that carries a much larger story.
Beyond Shea
Shea butter is where MAAGO begins, but it is not where our vision ends.
Through AGO LIMITED, we are building a home for thoughtfully created products, stories, and experiences that bring together culture, ritual, and community.
We envision a brand in which heritage is not treated as something distant, fixed, or merely decorative. It is living. It continues to inform how we create, how we gather, and how we understand ourselves within modern life.
As MAAGO grows, we remain committed to honoring the traditions that shaped us, strengthening our relationships with the people behind our products, and creating experiences that invite people to approach everyday life with greater presence and purpose.
MAAGO is our way of carrying something meaningful forward—honoring where it began while creating space for where it can go next.

MAAGO began with a question:
How can something so familiar to one generation become distant to the next—and how do we carry it forward without losing the story it holds?
Growing up in Ghana, shea butter was part of everyday life. Known as nkuto in Twi, it was not presented as a beauty trend or reserved for special occasions. It was used in the home, applied to the skin, and trusted as a familiar part of caring for the family.
There was nothing elaborate about it. Shea butter was practical, dependable, and deeply woven into the rhythms of daily life.
Years later, we began to notice a distance forming between this tradition and a younger generation—particularly within the African diaspora. Shea butter was often seen as old-fashioned: something associated with the past rather than something that belonged in contemporary beauty and self-care.
Its origin was rarely part of the conversation. Neither were the women who produce it, the knowledge required to make it, or its enduring importance within the global beauty industry.
That distance became part of the reason for MAAGO.
Bringing Tradition Into Modern Life
MAAGO was created to give traditional Ghanaian shea butter a meaningful place in the way we live today.
By whipping traditionally processed shea butter and blending it with thoughtfully selected oils, we create products that feel soft, inviting, and easy to incorporate into everyday routines. The form may feel contemporary, but the foundation remains connected to Ghana, to tradition, and to the generations of knowledge behind it.
We do not believe tradition must be changed or left behind for modernity to enter the room.
Instead, we believe the two can meet thoughtfully.
MAAGO exists in that meeting place—between what has been passed down and what is still becoming. Between the rituals we inherited and the lives we are creating now.
This is what Rooted in ritual. Made for today. means to us.
Why Ritual Matters
At MAAGO, a ritual does not have to be elaborate, time-consuming, or performed perfectly.
It can be as simple as applying shea butter after a shower, taking a breath before the day begins, or choosing a familiar scent at the end of a long evening.
These small, repeated acts create opportunities to slow down and pay attention—to our bodies, our surroundings, and what we may need in that moment.
MAAGO products are created to become part of those moments: useful enough for everyday life and meaningful enough to return to.
Because caring for yourself does not always require doing more. Sometimes, it begins by becoming more present in what you already do.
